The Return of the Rake: A Leafy Tale of Lost Services and Fall Frustrations

Spring’s Green Glow, Fall’s Big Rake

A Leafy Mess: Why It’s Time to Vote for Change in Greensboro

Spring is finally here in Greensboro! The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and the trees are exploding with fresh green leaves. It’s a welcome sight after winter—but let’s not get too comfortable.

Because we all know what’s coming next.

Come fall, those same beautiful green leaves will turn into a crunchy, brown, back-breaking, money-sucking problem. And thanks to a decision by the Greensboro City Council, you’ll be dealing with those leaves all by yourself—again.

The city has canceled loose-leaf pickup for the second year in a row. That means no more city trucks rolling down the street with that glorious industrial-strength vacuum, saving your back (and your Saturday). Instead, you’re left to:

  • Drag your rake out of the shed like it’s a medieval torture device.

  • Stuff endless bags with dry, dusty leaves until your arms go numb.

  • Buy expensive brown paper yard waste bags (the kind that tears when they see a raindrop).

  • Or worse, hire a landscaping crew for hundreds of dollars to make your yard look halfway decent.

If you’re a senior citizen, a single parent, or just someone who doesn’t have the time or energy to spend every weekend battling your lawn, this is more than an inconvenience—it’s a real burden.

And here’s the kicker: this was a city service. Something we all paid for and depended on, especially in the fall. It wasn’t broken. But the City Council took it away without listening to the people who rely on it most—you, your neighbors, and your community.

And honestly? Nicky Smith doesn’t like picking up leaves, either.

That’s right—Nicky is one of us. He’s a homeowner in District 4 who has stared down a yard full of fallen leaves and thought, “There’s gotta be a better way.” He understands the frustration, the physical labor, and the unexpected cost. And he believes Greensboro can—and should—do better.

That’s why Nicky Smith is running for City Council in District 4.

Nicky believes the role of local government is to make life easier, not harder. He’s not a career politician—he’s a business owner, a community advocate, and someone who listens. He’s been fighting for common-sense solutions and practical services that residents want and need.

He’s not promising magic. But he is pledging to do everything in his power to:

  • Bring back the loose-leaf pickup program.

  • Hold the City Council accountable to the citizens they represent.

  • Put your tax dollars to work on services that matter to your everyday life.

So this fall, when those once-beautiful green leaves start piling up, and the rake calls your name, remember—you don’t have to accept this mess.

You have a choice. You have a voice.

Vote for Nicky Smith for Greensboro City Council, District 4.

Because your weekends (and your back) deserve better. 🍂
