Marikay Abuzuaiter: A Thoughtful Choice for Greensboro's Mayor Pro Tem

Councilwoman Marikay Abuzuaiter was chosen as Greensboro’s new mayor pro tem on Tuesday, succeeding Yvonne Johnson in the position more than a month after Johnson's death.

Why Marikay Abuzuaiter is the Right Choice for Greensboro Mayor Pro Tem Leadership

By Nicky Smith

The recent appointment of Marikay Abuzuaiter as Greensboro’s Mayor Pro Tem marks a pivotal moment for the city, balancing tradition with the evolving needs of our diverse community. As we reflect on this decision, it is essential to recognize why Abuzuaiter’s selection aligns with Greensboro’s broader goals and values, even amidst passionate discussions about diversity, equity, and representation.

Honoring Tradition While Embracing Inclusivity

The position of Mayor Pro Tem holds significant responsibility, including presiding over meetings, representing Greensboro at events, and assisting in city leadership duties. Historically, the role has been filled by an at-large council member, a tradition rooted in the principle that such representatives serve the entire city, rather than specific districts. Marikay Abuzuaiter, an at-large council member with over 14 years of dedicated service, exemplifies this citywide focus.

While some argued for a departure from this tradition to appoint District 2’s Dr. Goldie Wells, the council’s decision to uphold the practice reflects a commitment to continuity and unity. This is not a dismissal of the importance of diversity but rather an affirmation of the role’s purpose—to serve all of Greensboro equally. As Mayor Nancy Vaughan noted, “The immediacy of the position requires someone ready to serve the entire city tomorrow.” Abuzuaiter’s extensive experience ensures she can step seamlessly into this demanding role.

A Legacy of Leadership

Marikay Abuzuaiter’s connection to the community and her dedication to Greensboro’s progress are undeniable. Her consistent presence across the city, her knowledge of its complexities, and her readiness to take on leadership tasks have made her a trusted figure. Her approach, inspired by the late Yvonne Johnson, is one of inclusivity and compassion. Abuzuaiter’s words at the council meeting resonate deeply: “I know that I can never fill her [Johnson’s] shoes, but I will certainly try to honor her and her legacy.”

A Difficult Decision in a Complex Context

The debate over this appointment highlighted the underlying tensions in addressing representation and equity in leadership. Dr. Wells’ candidacy was supported by valid arguments about the need for leadership reflective of Greensboro’s diverse demographics. As a Black woman from East Greensboro, her appointment would have sent a powerful message about inclusivity.

However, representation takes many forms. Abuzuaiter’s supporters emphasized her ability to represent all citizens, transcending racial and geographic boundaries. In her role as Mayor Pro Tem, Abuzuaiter’s commitment to inclusivity and equity can continue to honor the vision of leaders like Johnson, who saw no barriers in her service to Greensboro.

Looking Forward

This decision was not without its challenges, but the unanimous final vote underscores the council’s collective belief in Abuzuaiter’s ability to serve the entire city effectively. Greensboro is at a crossroads, striving to balance tradition with the evolving demands of its diverse community. Abuzuaiter’s leadership represents an opportunity to bridge these dimensions, fostering unity while advancing the city’s goals.

As we move forward, let us remember that leadership is not solely about titles or traditions; it is about action and impact. Marikay Abuzuaiter’s appointment as Mayor Pro Tem is a testament to her unwavering dedication to Greensboro, and I am confident she will honor this role with the same passion and integrity she has demonstrated throughout her career.
