Greensboro stands at a pivotal moment. Our city’s infrastructure—roads, water systems, broadband access—is showing signs of age and neglect. In 2023 alone, the city repaired 3,434 potholes, highlighting the pressing need for comprehensive infrastructure maintenance. Addressing these challenges is not just about improving daily commutes; it’s about positioning Greensboro as a competitive, attractive destination for businesses and residents alike.
Robust infrastructure is the backbone of economic development. Companies like Toyota have recognized Greensboro’s potential, investing $13.9 billion in a new battery plant expected to create over 5,000 jobs. However, to attract and retain such investments, we must ensure our city’s foundational systems are reliable and modern.
As a candidate for the Greensboro City Council, I, Nicky Smith, propose a comprehensive approach to revitalize our city’s infrastructure:
Comprehensive Infrastructure Audit: Initiate an independent assessment to identify critical areas in need of repair and modernization. This audit will guide our investment priorities and ensure transparency in the allocation of resources.
Targeted Investments in Underserved Areas: Focus on upgrading infrastructure in historically neglected neighborhoods, promoting equity, and stimulating local economic growth.
Leverage State and Federal Funding: Aggressively pursue grants and funding opportunities, such as the Community Development Block Grants, to finance infrastructure projects without overburdening local taxpayers.
Enhance Digital Connectivity: Expand broadband access to ensure all residents and businesses have the digital tools necessary for success in today’s economy.
Modernize Transportation Networks: Upgrade roads, bridges, and public transportation systems to enhance mobility, reduce congestion, and foster economic growth.
Investing in our infrastructure is investing in Greensboro’s future. By addressing these foundational challenges head-on, we can create a city that not only meets the needs of its current residents but also attracts new businesses and opportunities. Let’s work together to build a stronger, more resilient Greensboro.
Our city’s infrastructure challenges didn’t appear overnight, and they won’t be solved overnight—but with the right leadership, we can chart a clear, ambitious path forward. Investing in reliable roads, modern utilities, and digital connectivity isn’t just about fixing today’s problems—it’s about building a foundation for tomorrow’s success.
I’m Nicky Smith, and I’m ready to get to work. Together, we can transform Greensboro’s infrastructure into an actual engine of growth, safety, and opportunity for every resident and every neighborhood. Let’s rebuild better and ensure Greensboro is a city where businesses want to invest and families wish to thrive.
