In November 2024, IQE, a leading global supplier of advanced semiconductor products and services, announced a significant expansion of its Greensboro operations. The company plans to invest $305 million over several years to enhance its manufacturing facility on Gallimore Dairy Road, aiming to produce next-generation compound semiconductor materials. This expansion is expected to create at least 109 new jobs, offering an average annual salary of $64,908, thereby boosting the local economy. (Governor’s Office)
As a candidate for Greensboro City Council District 4, I, Nicky Smith, am committed to collaborating with fellow council members to attract and support such high-tech investments. By fostering a business-friendly environment and leveraging initiatives like the federal CHIPS Act, we can position Greensboro as a hub for technological innovation. This includes streamlining processes for businesses, providing necessary infrastructure, and ensuring our workforce is equipped with the skills required for these advanced industries.
The city’s Information Technology Department plays a crucial role in this vision by providing leading-edge technical services to support the business needs of our internal departments. Enhancing our digital infrastructure and promoting data-driven decision-making can create an environment conducive to technological growth. The Greensboro Economic Development Office also continues facilitating partnerships that bring investments like IQE’s expansion into our community. (Greensboro Economic Development)
This expansion is more than just an economic boost—it’s a statement that Greensboro is ready to lead in the technology sector. With continued collaboration between government, business leaders, and educational institutions, we can develop a thriving ecosystem that attracts and retains top tech talent.
When elected to Greensboro City Council, I will prioritize policies that support the tech industry, ensure workforce development, and attract further investment in our city. By working together, we can secure a prosperous future where Greensboro becomes a national leader in technological innovation.
Let’s build the future our city deserves. Greensboro is ready for a new era—let’s get to work.
