Boom Supersonic is making headlines once again, and this time, they are not just breaking the sound barrier; they are breaking new ground for economic growth in our region. With the successful supersonic flights of the XB-1 prototype and the continued progress toward the Overture supersonic airliner, Boom Supersonic is positioning itself as a major force in aerospace innovation—and Greensboro is at the heart of it all.
The second series of supersonic flight tests, set to livestream on Monday, showcases the cutting-edge technology Boom is perfecting right here in the Piedmont Triad. These advances are not just about faster travel; they represent a significant investment in high-tech manufacturing, research, and development, bringing with them the promise of good-paying jobs and long-term economic benefits.
Boom Supersonic’s $500 million “superfactory” at Piedmont Triad International Airport is a game-changer for our local economy. With 150,000 square feet dedicated to production, 24,000 square feet for office space, and 5,000 square feet for receiving, this facility is more than just a manufacturing plant—it’s a hub of innovation. By 2029-30, Boom has pledged to create at least 1,781 jobs, many of which will be high-paying positions requiring expertise in aerospace engineering, advanced manufacturing, and technical trades. These jobs will not only provide career opportunities for individuals with industry experience but will also attract new talent to our region, further strengthening our workforce.
The impact of Boom’s success extends far beyond the aerospace sector. As the company scales up production, local businesses—both large and small—will benefit. From suppliers providing raw materials to service providers supporting Boom’s growing workforce, there will be a ripple effect that boosts the entire business ecosystem in the Piedmont Triad.
As a business leader and advocate for economic development, I am committed to engaging with existing business owners to understand their needs and support their expansion efforts. We must ensure that our local companies have the resources, infrastructure, and workforce needed to grow alongside industry giants like Boom Supersonic. Boom’s ambitious timeline for the Overture airliner means that the time to act is now. Equipment installation at PTI is set for 2024, followed by assembly in 2025, the first aircraft rollout in 2026, and the first test flight in 2027. By 2029, when Boom achieves FAA certification and begins passenger flights, Greensboro will be recognized as a global leader in supersonic travel innovation.
This is a pivotal moment for our community. We must seize this opportunity to train and develop a workforce that meets the demands of this growing industry. Through vocational training, apprenticeships, and partnerships with technical schools and universities, we can equip individuals with the skills needed to thrive in high-tech manufacturing and aerospace careers.
