In recent years, Greensboro’s Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) has quietly transformed into one of the most promising aerospace hubs on the East Coast. From the continued success of HondaJet to the arrival of Boom Supersonic’s cutting-edge facility, PTI has proven itself to be more than just a regional airport—it’s now a national player in the high-stakes world of aircraft innovation and manufacturing.
And the next leap may be its biggest yet.
California-based JetZero, an aircraft manufacturer known for its revolutionary blended-wing-body design, has confirmed that PTI is one of just five national finalists for its new production facility. This project could deliver an astounding 10,000 new jobs to the Piedmont region. The company expects to make a final decision within six weeks, and Greensboro is a strong contender.
Founded in 2021, JetZero is developing a next-generation aircraft that promises 50% greater fuel efficiency than today’s conventional planes. With strategic partnerships already in place with Delta and Alaska Airlines, JetZero is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable aviation, and PTI is well-positioned to help build that future.
Our region boasts a proven track record with aerospace leaders. HondaJet’s long-standing commitment to PTI not only validates the area’s logistical advantages but also demonstrates the success that companies can find here. Meanwhile, the arrival of Boom Supersonic further cements PTI’s reputation as a magnet for high-tech aviation enterprises.
Just as critical, our workforce is ready. Local community colleges and workforce development programs, including Guilford Tech’s aviation campus, have already invested in training pipelines tailored specifically to aerospace manufacturing. With a highly skilled labor pool already in place, JetZero would find a community eager and equipped to help build the future of flight.
The Piedmont Triad region is home to several institutions offering specialized aviation programs:
Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC): GTCC offers comprehensive aviation programs, including Aviation Systems Technology, Aviation Management, and Career Pilot programs. The college’s facilities, including the T.H. Davis Aviation Center and the Caesar Cone II Aviation Building, provide students with hands-on experience using full-motion flight simulators and access to aircraft for maintenance training.
Forsyth Technical Community College: Forsyth Tech provides an Aviation Systems Technology degree, equipping students with skills to become FAA-approved aircraft mechanics. The program encompasses areas such as aircraft maintenance, avionics, and air traffic control, preparing graduates for various sectors within the aviation industry.
Triad Aviation Academy, located in Greensboro, offers a range of flight training programs, including Private Pilot License, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot License, and the Certified Flight Instructor Academy. The academy is unique in providing both pilot flight training and flight attendant training under one umbrella.
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Greensboro Campus, in partnership with GTCC, offers various aviation degrees and certificates, including Aeronautics, Aviation Maintenance, and Aviation Safety, providing students with opportunities to pursue advanced education in aviation disciplines.
These institutions, among others in the region, have developed programs aligned with industry needs, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled professionals ready to support and grow the aerospace sector in the Piedmont Triad.
The opportunity at hand is not just about jobs—it’s about legacy. Greensboro and the Piedmont Triad are on the verge of becoming one of the premier aerospace corridors in America. With the right investment and leadership, we can take flight into a new era of innovation, sustainability, and economic growth.
