BUILDING A BETTER GREENSBORO, TOGETHER.

The Rising Cost of Living in Greensboro: Where Are Our Tax Dollars Going?

As a resident of Greensboro, I have witnessed our property taxes increase year after year, yet there is no improvement in the services and benefits provided to our citizens. In fact, instead of receiving more for our tax dollars, we are seeing city services taken away. The most recent example is the loss of curbside leaf collection—a service many of us relied on, now stripped away without an adequate replacement.

This is unacceptable. Our hard-earned money should go toward improving our city, not reducing the services we depend on. When elected to the Greensboro City Council, I will fight for a freeze on property tax increases and conduct a deep dive into the budget to uncover wasteful spending draining our city’s resources.

Property Tax Increases Without Enhanced Services

In June 2024, the Greensboro City Council adopted an $802 million budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025, maintaining the property tax rate at 67.25 cents per $100 of assessed property value. While the tax rate remained unchanged, residents have not seen a corresponding enhancement in city services. Instead, essential services like curbside leaf collection have been eliminated, leaving citizens to manage leaf disposal without adequate support. Moreover, residents are facing increased costs in other areas. Water, sewer, and stormwater rates have risen by an average of 9.1 percent, resulting in an additional $4.59 monthly for the average customer. These hikes compound the financial burden on Greensboro citizens without delivering proportional benefits. Read more at City Manager Presents Recommended Budget for Fiscal Year 2024-25

The Need for Financial Accountability

One of my top priorities will be conducting a comprehensive audit of city-funded programs, particularly those that may have direct ties to current and former City Council members. Taxpayer dollars should be allocated based on the merit and effectiveness of programs, not personal or political affiliations. As a leader with no conflicts of interest or personal connections to any nonprofit organization receiving city funding, I will ensure that all spending is transparent and justifiable.
