Affordable Housing and Community Development: A Commitment to Greensboro’s Future

Building a Better Greensboro: A Bold Plan for Affordable Housing and Community Growth

Nicky Smith, Greensboro City Council candidate, standing proudly with a vision to enhance public safety, strengthen community partnerships, and build a brighter future for Greensboro. As a candidate for Greensboro City Council District 4, I am committed to ensuring that our city remains a vibrant and inclusive community where everyone can access safe, affordable housing. Housing affordability is a pressing issue, and the City Manager’s recent initiative to increase Greensboro’s housing stock is a step in the right direction. However, there is still much work to be done to promote equitable development and address the diverse housing needs of our residents.

Understanding the Need

Greensboro is experiencing economic growth, with new businesses and job opportunities emerging across the city. While this growth is promising, it also brings challenges, particularly in the housing sector. Rising home prices and rental costs have made it increasingly difficult for many residents—especially young families, seniors, and essential workers—to find affordable housing. We must take proactive steps to ensure that everyone, regardless of income level, has a place to call home.

My Commitment to Action

As your City Council representative, I will advocate for smart policies that enhance Greensboro’s housing affordability and community development efforts. My key priorities include:

  1. Expanding Affordable Housing Options: We must work with developers, nonprofits, and financial institutions to create more affordable housing units throughout the city. This includes leveraging public-private partnerships and offering incentives to builders who prioritize affordable housing developments.
  2. Preserving Existing Affordable Housing: In addition to building new housing, we must protect and maintain the affordability of existing housing. This means supporting policies that prevent displacement, investing in housing rehabilitation programs, and ensuring fair housing protections for all residents.
  3. Promoting Mixed-Income Developments: Encouraging mixed-income communities will help prevent economic segregation while fostering diverse, thriving neighborhoods. By integrating affordable housing within market-rate developments, we can create inclusive spaces that benefit everyone.
  4. Supporting First-Time Homebuyers: Homeownership is a crucial pathway to economic stability. I will work to expand down payment assistance programs, financial literacy initiatives, and access to affordable mortgage options to help more Greensboro residents become homeowners.
  5. Investing in Community Infrastructure: Housing is only one piece of the puzzle. We must ensure our neighborhoods have strong infrastructure, including reliable public transportation, quality schools, parks, and access to essential services.

Working Together for a Better Greensboro

Affordable housing and equitable development are not just policy issues—they are about the quality of life for every Greensboro resident. I believe that by working together, we can create a city where growth benefits everyone, not just a select few. As your City Council representative, I will fight for policies that make housing accessible, sustainable, and affordable for all.
