BUILDING A BETTER GREENSBORO, TOGETHER.

A Different Approach to Greensboro's Challenges

Written By Nicky Smith – December 11, 2024

The recent headlines about our city’s approach to homelessness have touched me deeply as a candidate and a longtime resident of Greensboro. While I understand the frustration of our downtown merchants, like Chris Waldeck, who spoke about escalating concerns, I believe we need leadership that balances compassion with practical solutions.

Throughout my career, I’ve learned that complex problems require comprehensive approaches. Our downtown businesses deserve to thrive, and public safety is paramount. But simply making it illegal to sit or lie down in public spaces isn’t a solution – it’s a Band-Aid that risks criminalizing poverty while failing to address the root causes.

As your City Council member, I’ll bring a three-pronged approach to this crisis:

First, I propose expanding our partnerships with behavioral health providers and social service organizations. Assistant City Manager Andrea Harrell is right – we must couple any enforcement with robust resources and support services. I’ll work to increase funding for mental health services, addiction treatment, and job training programs.

Second, I’ll advocate for smart investment in affordable housing. Our city allocates millions for housing initiatives, but we need strategic planning to make these investments more effective. I’ll push for innovative solutions like converting unused commercial spaces into transitional housing and expanding shelter capacity.

Third, I’ll focus on prevention. Through my experience working with community organizations, I’ve seen how job loss or medical bills can quickly lead to homelessness. I’ll champion programs that help at-risk residents before they lose their homes.

Downtown Greensboro Inc. board member Chris Waldeck expressed fears about our city’s reputation. I share his concern, but I believe Greensboro’s reputation will be enhanced by becoming a model city that addresses homelessness compassionately and effectively.

Unlike the current approach of pushing people out of sight, I’m committed to bringing all stakeholders to the table – business owners, residents, service providers, and members of our homeless community. Only by understanding all perspectives can we craft solutions that truly work.

Our city faces real challenges, but I’ve seen firsthand how Greensboro rises to meet them. With thoughtful leadership and a commitment to both our business community and our most vulnerable residents, we can create a downtown that’s vibrant, safe, and compassionate.

I’m Nicky Smith, and I’m asking for your vote because I believe in building a Greensboro that works for everyone. Together, we can find solutions that strengthen our community while preserving our humanity.

Let’s create change that makes a real difference. That’s my commitment to you.
