Like cities across the nation, Greensboro has found itself grappling with a surge in crime that threatens the safety and well-being of its residents. Over the past four years, our community has faced challenges that were once unimaginable—gang violence, deadly drugs infiltrating our streets, and a rise in hate-filled rhetoric on college campuses. These issues aren’t just statistics; they are stories of lives lost, families torn apart, and neighborhoods living in fear.
As leaders, we are responsible for ensuring that Greensboro is a safe place to live, work, and raise a family. Yet, in recent years, the City Council has failed to provide the kind of leadership and support our local police force needs to combat these growing threats effectively. It’s time for a change that prioritizes safety, accountability, and unwavering support for those who put their lives on the line to protect us.
Every resident in Greensboro has felt the impact of rising crime. It’s the mother who fears letting her children walk to school, the business owner who invests in extra security, and the college student who wonders if their campus is still a safe space for learning and growth. Violent crime, gang activity, and the spread of deadly drugs like fentanyl are no longer distant issues; they’re right here, on our streets and in our neighborhoods.
Gang activity has become a major contributor to crime in Greensboro. These networks prey on vulnerable youth, drawing them into a cycle of violence and destruction. Entire neighborhoods are affected, as families fear being caught in the crossfire. Without a coordinated effort to dismantle these gangs and provide alternatives for at-risk youth, the problem will only continue to grow.
The rise of fentanyl and other deadly drugs is devastating Greensboro’s families. These substances are cheap, potent, and widely available, claiming lives at an alarming rate. Our youth are particularly at risk, with dealers targeting them in schools, parks, and even online. This crisis demands immediate and decisive action to cut off the supply and hold dealers accountable.
Hate-filled rhetoric has also entered our community, particularly on college campuses. What should be spaces for intellectual growth and dialogue have sometimes become platforms for divisive and harmful ideologies. This threatens students’ safety and undermines the unity and inclusivity that Greensboro prides itself on.
The rise in crime isn’t just a policing issue—it’s a leadership issue. Over the past several years, the Greensboro City Council has failed to support our police department fully, leaving officers under-resourced and demoralized. This lack of support has hampered their ability to do their jobs effectively, even as crime continues to rise.
Leadership must change. Greensboro needs a City Council that stands with its police, providing them with the resources, tools, and autonomy to protect our community. We also need leaders who recognize that addressing crime requires a holistic approach, including prevention, enforcement, and community engagement.
Leadership must change course. As a priority, Greensboro’s city council must:
This new direction isn’t about being punitive—it’s about being proactive. It’s about creating a Greensboro where criminals know they will be held accountable and families know they are safe.
Backing the police isn’t just about funding—it’s about trust, respect, and collaboration. The Greensboro Police Department must feel confident that its leaders stand with it. At the same time, the city council must work with community organizations, schools, and residents to address systemic issues that contribute to crime.
Building trust between law enforcement and the community is critical. Programs that foster relationships, such as community policing initiatives, can bridge gaps and create partnerships that make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
Greensboro’s leadership must also hold itself accountable. For too long, we’ve seen decisions made without considering their impact on safety. As city council members, it is our responsibility to ensure that every policy, budget, and initiative prioritizes the well-being of our citizens.
This means creating clear benchmarks for reducing crime and regularly updating the community on progress. It means listening to residents’ concerns and acting swiftly when issues arise. It means ensuring that every dollar spent on public safety is used effectively to protect the people of Greensboro.
Imagine a Greensboro where parents can send their children to play in the park without fear, businesses can thrive without the threat of crime, and college campuses are safe spaces for dialogue and learning. This vision isn’t a distant dream—it’s achievable with the right leadership and commitment.
It starts with acknowledging that the status quo isn’t working. It requires bold action to eliminate gangs, remove deadly drugs from our streets, and foster a culture of respect and inclusion. Most importantly, it requires a city council that understands the importance of public safety and is willing to do whatever it takes to support our police force and community.
Greensboro stands at a crossroads. We can continue down the path of rising crime and division, or we can choose a new direction that prioritizes safety, unity, and accountability. This begins with leadership unafraid to take a stand and make the tough decisions to protect our community.
Nicky Smith is that leader. As a candidate for Greensboro City Council, Nicky understands that ensuring public safety isn’t just about enforcement; it’s about creating a community where everyone feels valued and protected. He is committed to working hand-in-hand with the police, supporting their efforts while addressing the root causes of crime through prevention and engagement.
“Our families deserve better,” Nicky says. “They deserve to feel safe in their homes, neighborhoods, and schools. As leaders, it’s our responsibility to make that happen. And that starts with giving our police the tools and support they need to do their jobs.”
The fight against crime is about more than statistics; it’s about the lives and futures of everyone in our city. By standing with the police, addressing the root causes of crime, and fostering unity across Greensboro, we can build a community where families feel safe, businesses thrive, and neighbors look out for one another.
This November, vote for leadership that prioritizes safety and accountability. Vote for leadership that takes a stand against crime and for the families of Greensboro. Vote for Nicky Smith. We can build a safer, stronger, and more united city.
Let’s build the future our city deserves. Greensboro is ready for a new era—let’s get to work.
